Charge state

Charge state is the number of charges carried by an ion, written as z. In electrospray mass spectrometry, peptides commonly appear as [M+2H]²⁺, [M+3H]³⁺ and higher charge states. The spacing between isotope peaks, equal to 1/z, allows the charge state to be determined at high resolution.
