Ion suppression

Ion suppression is a reduction in the mass spectrometry signal of an analyte caused by co-eluting substances that compete for charge or alter droplet evaporation in the ion source. Salts, detergents and trifluoroacetic acid are common causes in peptide analysis. Chromatographic separation and volatile buffers help reduce it.
