Inert gas

An inert gas is a gas that does not readily undergo chemical reactions with the stored material, such as nitrogen or argon. Blanketing or backfilling peptide vials with inert gas displaces oxygen and moisture, reducing oxidation of susceptible residues such as methionine, cysteine and tryptophan during long-term storage.
