# ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation: what it means for a peptide testing lab

ISO/IEC 17025 is the international standard for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories. 'Accredited' is a stronger statement than 'independent', but only for the methods listed on the lab's scope of accreditation. This guide explains how to check.

## What the standard covers

- Impartiality and confidentiality.
- Competence of staff, suitable facilities and calibrated equipment.
- Validated or verified methods, measurement uncertainty and traceability of measurements.
- Control of records, reporting of results and handling of complaints.

## Accreditation is scope-specific

A national accreditation body (in the UK, UKAS) assesses a lab against ISO/IEC 17025 for named tests. A lab can be accredited for, say, heavy metals in water while its peptide HPLC method is not on the scope. The schedule of accreditation, published by the accreditation body, is the document to check.

Case studies of accreditation show that it changes documentation, quality control and staff practice, which is the point: results are produced inside an audited system.

## Accredited, independent and in-house: how they differ

- In-house: the seller's own lab or staff tested the lot.
- Independent (third-party): a separate lab tested it; competence is not implied.
- Accredited: a lab whose specific method has been assessed against ISO/IEC 17025 by an accreditation body.

## How to check a certificate

- Find the lab's name and accreditation number on the report.
- Look up the schedule of accreditation and confirm the test method is listed.
- Check the report number with the lab where it offers verification.
- Match the lot on the report to the printed lot number on your vial.

## At Sable

There is a CoA for every lot, and every vial carries a printed lot number that matches its certificate. A CoA is emailed within 2 hours of a request.

See how to verify a CoA with the issuing lab using its task number and verification key.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation cover every test a lab runs?

No. It covers only the methods listed on the lab's schedule of accreditation.

### Who accredits labs in the UK?

UKAS, the United Kingdom Accreditation Service.

### Is an independent lab automatically accredited?

No. Independence and accreditation are separate.
