# BPC-157: sequence, structure and published research background

BPC-157 is a synthetic linear pentadecapeptide, Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val, with a molecular weight of about 1419.5 g/mol. It was described as a partial sequence of a gastric-juice protein. Almost all published work is preclinical, in rodent and cell models, and most of it comes from one research group.

## Where does the name come from?

'BPC' stands for body protection compound. The research group in Zagreb that first reported it described the 15-residue sequence as part of a larger protein found in gastric juice and called it a 'stable gastric pentadecapeptide', a phrase that appears in the titles of many of its papers.

The peptide sold for research is made by solid-phase synthesis. It is not extracted from tissue.

## What does the published research cover?

Most papers are rodent studies of injury models (gut, tendon, muscle, blood vessels) or work on nitric-oxide signalling and angiogenesis. Reviews by the originating group sum up this literature.

Things to keep in mind: the evidence base is concentrated in a single group, most of it is animal work, and independent replication is limited.

## How does BPC-157 differ structurally from TB-500?

They are often mentioned together, but the two peptides share no sequence and come from unrelated proteins. See the separate thymosin guide for TB-500's origin.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the amino acid sequence of BPC-157?

BPC-157 is Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val (GEPPPGKPADDAGLV), 15 residues, formula C62H98N16O22 per PubChem.

### Is BPC-157 a natural peptide?

It was reported as a partial sequence of a gastric-juice protein. The research material is fully synthetic.

### Is BPC-157 research mainly in humans?

No. The published literature is mainly rodent and cell studies, largely from one research group.

### What is the difference between BPC-157 and TB-500?

BPC-157 is a 15-residue gastric-protein fragment. TB-500 is a 7-residue acetylated fragment of thymosin β4. They are unrelated in sequence and origin.
