# Trifluoroacetic acid

Trifluoroacetic acid (TFA, CF3COOH) is a strong, volatile organic acid widely used in peptide chemistry. It cleaves peptides from resin in Fmoc synthesis and is a common ion-pairing additive in reversed-phase HPLC mobile phases, usually at about 0.1%. Because it is used in purification, synthetic peptides are often isolated as TFA salts.
