# Tandem mass spectrometry

Tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) involves selecting a precursor ion, fragmenting it and analysing the resulting fragments. For peptides, fragmentation along the backbone produces b and y ion series whose mass differences reveal the amino acid sequence, confirming identity and locating modifications.
