# Sublimation

Sublimation is the direct transition of a substance from the solid to the gas phase without passing through the liquid phase. In freeze-drying, ice in the frozen sample sublimes under vacuum at low temperature, leaving behind the dried solute. The rate depends on chamber pressure, shelf temperature and the sample's physical structure.
