# Solid-phase peptide synthesis

Solid-phase peptide synthesis (SPPS) builds a peptide one amino acid at a time on an insoluble polymer resin, from the C-terminus to the N-terminus. Repeated cycles of deprotection, coupling and washing allow excess reagents to be removed by filtration. Developed by Bruce Merrifield, it is the standard method for producing synthetic research peptides.
