# Serine

Serine (three-letter code Ser, one-letter code S) is a small polar amino acid with a hydroxymethyl side chain. Its hydroxyl group can form hydrogen bonds and is a common site of phosphorylation and glycosylation. In Fmoc synthesis, the serine side chain is normally protected as a tert-butyl ether.
