# Scavenger

A scavenger is a reagent added to the cleavage cocktail during peptide synthesis to capture reactive carbocations released when protecting groups are removed. Without scavengers, these species can alkylate residues such as tryptophan, methionine, cysteine and tyrosine. Typical scavengers include water, triisopropylsilane, ethanedithiol, thioanisole and phenol, chosen according to the peptide sequence.
