# Residue

In peptide chemistry, a residue is the part of an amino acid that remains once it has been incorporated into a chain, after losing the elements of water during peptide bond formation. Peptide length is counted in residues, so a decapeptide contains ten residues, and residue masses rather than free amino acid masses are summed to calculate molecular weight.
