# Racemisation

Racemisation is the conversion of a chiral compound into a mixture of its enantiomers. In peptide synthesis, activated amino acids, especially cysteine and histidine, can partially convert from the L- to the D-configuration. The resulting diastereomeric peptides may be difficult to separate and can be detected by chiral chromatography or careful HPLC method development.
