# Phosphate-buffered saline

Phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) is an isotonic aqueous buffer containing sodium chloride and phosphate salts, typically at pH 7.4. It is widely used in cell biology and to dilute peptides for in vitro assays. PBS is non-volatile and suppresses ionisation, so it is unsuitable for direct mass spectrometry.
