# Oxidation

Oxidation is the loss of electrons by a species, often involving gain of oxygen. In peptides, methionine readily oxidises to methionine sulfoxide (+16 Da), and cysteine can form disulfides or sulfonic acids. Tryptophan is also susceptible. Storing peptides dry, cold, protected from light and under inert gas helps limit oxidative degradation.
