# Osmolarity

Osmolarity is the concentration of osmotically active particles in a solution, expressed in osmoles per litre. Cell culture media and buffers are formulated to be close to physiological osmolarity, about 280 to 300 mOsm/L, so that adding peptide solutions in non-isotonic solvents at high volumes may stress cells.
