# One-letter code

The one-letter code is a compact notation in which each standard amino acid is represented by a single capital letter, for example G for glycine, K for lysine and W for tryptophan. It was introduced by Margaret Dayhoff and is standardised by IUPAC-IUBMB. Three-letter codes such as Gly, Lys and Trp are also used.
