# N-terminus

The N-terminus is the end of a peptide or protein chain that carries a free amino group. By convention, peptide sequences are written and numbered starting from the N-terminus. It is a common site for chemical modification, such as acetylation or attachment of labels, which can change charge, stability and the mass observed by mass spectrometry.
