# Monoisotopic mass

Monoisotopic mass is the mass of a molecule calculated using the most abundant isotope of each element, such as carbon-12, hydrogen-1, nitrogen-14 and oxygen-16. High-resolution mass spectrometers resolve isotopic peaks, so the monoisotopic peak is used to confirm peptide identity. It is lower than the average mass, especially for larger peptides.
