# Molecular formula

A molecular formula specifies the number of atoms of each element in a molecule, for example C2H5NO2 for glycine. For peptides it is derived from the sequence, terminal groups and modifications, and is used to calculate exact monoisotopic and average masses. It does not show how atoms are connected.
