# Mobile phase

The mobile phase is the liquid or gas that carries the sample through a chromatography column. In reversed-phase peptide HPLC it usually consists of water (solvent A) and acetonitrile (solvent B), each containing about 0.1% trifluoroacetic acid or formic acid. Its composition controls retention and selectivity.
