# Methionine

Methionine (three-letter code Met, one-letter code M) is a sulfur-containing amino acid with a thioether side chain. Methionine is readily oxidised to methionine sulfoxide, increasing mass by 16 Da, which is a common degradation product seen by mass spectrometry. Antioxidant scavengers are often included during cleavage.
