# Mass-to-charge ratio

The mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) is the quantity measured by a mass spectrometer: the mass of an ion divided by its charge number. Peptides analysed by electrospray often carry several charges, so a single peptide appears as several peaks at different m/z values, from which the neutral mass is calculated.
