# Maleimide

Maleimide is a reactive group that forms stable thioether bonds with thiol groups, such as cysteine side chains, at near-neutral pH. Maleimide reagents are widely used for site-specific labelling and conjugation of cysteine-containing peptides. The resulting thiosuccinimide linkage can undergo slow exchange or hydrolysis.
