# Limit of detection

The limit of detection (LOD) is the lowest amount of an analyte that can be reliably distinguished from background noise, though not necessarily quantified with acceptable precision. It is often estimated as the concentration giving a signal-to-noise ratio of about 3:1 and is relevant to detecting trace peptide impurities.
