# Ion-pairing agent

An ion-pairing agent is a mobile-phase additive that forms neutral or less polar ion pairs with charged analytes, modifying their retention in reversed-phase chromatography. Trifluoroacetic acid is the classic ion-pairing agent for peptides, improving peak shape. Formic acid is weaker but more compatible with mass spectrometry.
