Glossary

# Hygroscopic

A hygroscopic substance readily absorbs moisture from the surrounding air. Many lyophilised peptides are hygroscopic, so opening a cold vial in humid air causes condensation and water uptake, which can accelerate degradation and distort weighing. Vials should be warmed to room temperature, ideally in a desiccator, before opening.
