# Hydrophobicity

Hydrophobicity describes the tendency of a molecule or side chain to avoid water. Peptides rich in residues such as leucine, isoleucine, valine, phenylalanine and tryptophan are more hydrophobic, tend to elute later in reversed-phase HPLC and may need small amounts of organic solvent such as acetonitrile or DMSO to dissolve before dilution into aqueous buffer.
