# Glutamic acid

Glutamic acid (three-letter code Glu, one-letter code E) is an acidic amino acid with a side-chain carboxyl group, negatively charged at physiological pH. It increases peptide solubility in neutral and basic buffers. Its side chain is commonly protected as a tert-butyl ester in Fmoc synthesis and can be used as an attachment point for linkers.
