# Endotoxin

Endotoxin refers to lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria. Even trace amounts can trigger strong responses in immune cells and confound cell-based experiments. Endotoxin levels in peptide preparations are measured using the Limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL) assay and expressed in endotoxin units (EU).
