# Disulfide bond

A disulfide bond is a covalent sulfur-sulfur link, typically formed by oxidation of the thiol groups of two cysteine residues. In peptides it creates cyclic or bridged structures that constrain conformation. Forming a disulfide removes two hydrogen atoms, lowering the mass by about 2 Da, and the bond can be broken by reducing agents such as dithiothreitol.
