Glossary

# Dimethyl sulfoxide

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a polar aprotic solvent that dissolves many hydrophobic peptides and small molecules. Stock solutions are often prepared in DMSO and then diluted into aqueous buffer, keeping the final DMSO concentration low for cell assays. DMSO can oxidise cysteine and methionine residues, so alternatives may be preferred for such sequences.
