# Detergent

A detergent is an amphiphilic surfactant that can solubilise hydrophobic molecules and membrane proteins. Low concentrations of non-ionic detergents such as Tween 20 can reduce peptide adsorption to plastic surfaces. Many detergents interfere with mass spectrometry and some biological assays, so their use must be considered carefully.
