# Covalent bond

A covalent bond is a chemical bond formed by the sharing of electron pairs between atoms. The peptide backbone, side chains and disulfide bridges are held together by covalent bonds. Covalent modifications such as acetylation, amidation or lipidation permanently alter a peptide's structure and mass.
