# Cleavage

Cleavage is the final step of solid-phase peptide synthesis, in which the completed peptide is released from the resin and side-chain protecting groups are removed. In Fmoc chemistry this is usually done with concentrated trifluoroacetic acid plus scavengers such as water, triisopropylsilane or thiols, which trap reactive cations that would otherwise modify sensitive residues.
