# Charge state

Charge state is the number of charges carried by an ion, written as z. In electrospray mass spectrometry, peptides commonly appear as \[M+2H\]²⁺, \[M+3H\]³⁺ and higher charge states. The spacing between isotope peaks, equal to 1/z, allows the charge state to be determined at high resolution.
