# Benzyl alcohol

Benzyl alcohol is an aromatic alcohol (C6H5CH2OH) used as a preservative, solvent and bacteriostatic agent. At about 0.9% it is the preservative in bacteriostatic water. It can interact with some peptides and may interfere with certain cell-based assays, so preservative-free solvents are sometimes preferred for sensitive work.
