# Bacteriostatic water

Bacteriostatic water is sterile water containing a small amount of a preservative, typically 0.9% benzyl alcohol, which inhibits the growth of bacteria. In laboratories it is one of several solvents used to reconstitute lyophilised materials when a solution will be accessed more than once. Benzyl alcohol may be incompatible with some assays.
