Glossary

# Average mass

Average mass is the mass of a molecule calculated from the natural isotopic abundance of each element. It is used for molar calculations and is the value reported in many databases. For larger peptides, the most intense mass spectral peak is not the monoisotopic peak, and the isotope envelope centroid approximates the average mass.
