# Adduct ion

An adduct ion is formed when a molecule associates with an ion other than a proton, such as sodium \[M+Na\]⁺, potassium \[M+K\]⁺ or ammonium \[M+NH4\]⁺. Adducts appear at characteristic mass offsets from the protonated species and are common in peptide mass spectra. They must be distinguished from genuine impurities.
